Refusing to submit, Ella bides her time for resistance until a flight ends in violent coercion by the dragon aristocrat Gale. At her breaking point she calls for Rhaesa, who answers with furious protection, causing her resolve to waver between her family's betrayal and the dragon's dangerous, obsessive devotion.
